Hear it in Our Voices Series

MUSASA – CHATO: Women in Artisanal and Small-scale Mining doing what they can in the best way possible to provide basic needs for their families.

For decades governments in countries where Artisanal and Small-scale Mining (ASM) activities thrive, miners decry lack of recognition of the sector, lack of geological data in the areas licensed for ASM activities, lack of friendly infrastructure around ASM active operations, and lack of access to capital in order to rid the sector of traditional and almost primitive way of running their operations.

While the sector faces such challenges, government authorities still have the mandate to collect taxes and other government related revenues. Tanzania is not an exception. To make the most out of the sector, formalisation, improving of licensing systems and allocation of geologically surveyed areas for ASM activities should be prioritised. This way, the Government and miners will benefit from this seeming sleeping giant of a sector.
